Handplane Around the World
The idea is to send a Brownfish Handplane around the world to demo for a couple weeks at each location, sign the handplane, hopefully shoot some footage, and forward to the next location.
There will be a GoPro mount and camera that will be traveling with the handplane to document it's travels.
Email me Jason at dailybread.photo@gmail.com if you or anyone that you may know might be interested.

Todays Final Score
Paulownia 1, Brownfish 0. Sometimes it just happens. The Paulownia kicks my ass. Paulownia is an awesome wood. So incredibly strong. So incredibly light. It is the perfect performance wood for making handplanes and Alaia's. Problem is, sometimes it can be incredibly hard to manipulate. It has prominant hard grain, with softer wood in between. You start out with a 1" thick blank, and widdle it down to 1/4", and less in some places. Problem is, you really can't plan out, where that grain is gonna land, when you widdle away that much wood. So, if you get a bunch of grain going through the nose, well, to put it bluntly, you are screwed. It is so hard to even out the nose, when multiple offshoots of grain are pushing through. So, today, I was trying to finish up Brian's second board, so I could ship his two boards off to Australia tomarrow. Well, Brian is gonna have to wait another day. Sorry Brian. I spent a good extra 45 minutes trying to make it OK. This board will probably become a Demo. I'll fancy it up with some bells and whistles to take the eye off the outline. Most probably can't see, and won't see it, even if they are holding it. I can. I really don't want boards going out that are uneven. Even if they perform just the same. I could see Brian getting his reject board, going on trip to Hawaii, getting some good ones at Pipeline, then showing Cunningham his crooked hand plane that Brownfish made him. Yea, it's a stretch, but....

Japan Fish Fry
These four Handplanes are presently on their way to Japan for the Fish Fry this coming weekend. Ronnie Santaniello and Andrew Durham will be showing these things off alongside Bessel Surfboards. There will also be two others coming with Ian Zamora and Carla Rowland of Zamora Surfboards that should be floating around the event, for your viewing pleasure.

While Waiting
Last month I got an order from Tony in Newport. He and his buddy's wanted to order four Handplanes. During the interim of waiting for me to get their boards made. They made some of their own. From the looks of this video, they seem to have done a pretty good job. Don't really know why they need me. Well, the wait is quickly coming to an end. There Handplanes are being shipped today. Should get em tomarrow or the next day. Here is a quick video they came up with when they were testing their new creations.

Wedge/Viper Shirts
Now I'm not a Wedge guy in any way, shape, or form. Mainly because I don't live in the area, or, thats just a good excuse for being a wimp. I do respect what those guys do. The fact that they are out thier, in those waves, when it's big is one thing, but, to think that it is pretty much a shorepound on the inside, quite another. I don't particularly know who "The Boys" are, but, someday, I'd like to shake thier hands.

Redwood
I love the look of Redwood. Always has been on of my favorite woods. I finally got around to glueing up some of my own blanks. I love the look of these. The redwood in these two boards was found on the beach a few years ago. It was a long plank, about 10 feet. Maybe 6" x 6". Old growth. Just floated up. My kids played Teeter Totter on the beach with it for two days. A couple days later, our friend showed up with it at our house, not knowing it was the kids new toy at the beach. We let it dry out, then he made our Kitchen table with it. Came out incredible. Well, I still had some left over, so I cut it down, and glued some blanks up with it. What I really like about it, is that it is still really light. The Paulownia that it is glued up with, not much lighter. So, overall, these boards are about the same weight as the ones that I make with solid Paulownia. They were picked up by Scott Bass and Joel Tudor over the weekend. Hopefully they will find time between the array of boards those guys tend to ride.

Make one, buy one, steal one
However you can, get one. A handplane that is. I have heard this same statement over and over again. How amazed people are when they first give handplaning a try. I had that same feeling after I first used that plane that I found on the beach. It was made from fencing, no handle or hole, but still a blast. You can use almost anything to give you a little extra boost over just your hand. Here is one of the numerous posts I found while roaming the internet today:
"I’ve been having a blast on this handplane I recently made. You can keep your line high on the wave and really get a nice ride out of it.
I can get a lot longer ride, than just body surfing regular, it’s great. In critical moments, I’ve learned to pull the plane into the face of wave.
The dimensions on this board are 13″ x 9″ x 1″
It’s made of 1″ plywood I had laying around my house. Water proofed with Varethane, a urethane weather sealer for outdoor wood flooring."

Roommates
I have heard all kinds of gnarly story's about bad roommates. Luckily, I have never in my life had one. In fact, I can't remember a roommate that I wasn't real good friends with, both before we moved in together, and after. So, all my old roommates out their reading this, Thanks. I don't really plan on having anymore roomy's in the future, so, I think I am free and clear. These three Fruit Loop boards are going to Nikolas and his two roommates. Nikolas e-mailed me about a month ago, enquiring about a board. After sending him my response, he ordered three. To top it off, said I could do whatever I wanted with the colors. I have been making my own stains lately, so, this gave me an opportunity to do some experimenting. I like em, thanks Nikolas, for the support and also the patience.

A Bird for Bird
Bird wanted his board, well, lets just say, Birdized. So Rebecca took his old "Team Bird" laminate, that you used to get on your boards if you were real special, and came up with her own intrepretation. I remember those days in my teens, wishing I were one of those guys that got that "Team Bird" laminate on my board. Those days are now long gone, now I'm just hoping to get a new board every six months.
